Smokey Tobias (aka Biggie)

On March 2, 2009 Smokey Tobias went to heaven. What will we remember?

Smokey was fearless. He would often scale appliances only to get caught and then use his cat like skills to leap to safety. Never a shudder. Calm, cool and calculated. Like a Ninja.

Smokey was adventurous. Aren’t all house cats? When we lived in SF, we once found him 4 houses away on the front porch. Ok, adventurous is a relative term.

Smokey was navigationally challenged. We found him on the front porch crying in a corner. He couldn’t find his way home (4 houses away).

Smokey was a lover. You could always count on Smokey to shower you with a lap hug and a heavy purr for hours.

Even in the worst of times, Smokey endured. He would get two shots a day and be in the litter box all of his waking hours. When his body weight was down to 7-8 lbs he hobbled around here but he held his held up because he was strong. He made me appreciate my own health.

His little brother Bear always depended on Smokey because that is what little brothers do. Smokey was selfless. Even when Smokey couldn’t clean himself or keep himself warm, he would make room for his little brother to snuggle in close and give him a good wash. Unbelievable!

Smokey was cremated and we were given a very big bag of ashes for such a small cat? Strange. Not important though, because it’s not the ashes that represent Smokey. It is the love and endurance we remember…the adventure and fearless attitude….the sense of family he brought us and Bear. A chapter in our lives ended with Smokey. But we always remember.

We love you Biggie!
